About the Legal Ombudsman

The independent complaints and redress service for legal services, governed through the Office for Legal Complaints.

The Legal Ombudsman handles eligible complaints about legal services and provides independent redress under the approved scheme. It is distinct from the Office for Legal Complaints, which governs and oversees the scheme.

The Legal Ombudsman is not a court, tribunal, prosecution body, judicial conduct body, Legal Services Board or professional regulator. It cannot change a judicial decision or create disciplinary jurisdiction it does not possess.

No HRC complaints, moderation, appeals, community-management or customer-service body is treated as the Legal Ombudsman’s predecessor merely because it handled grievances.
